ROHM plans to continue expanding its LDO series featuring Nano Cap™ technology, aiming to contribute to the higher performance, miniaturization, and increased reliability of electronic devices.

Development Background

In recent years, the miniaturization and higher density of electronic devices have driven demand for power ICs capable of stable operation with small-capacity capacitors, enabling space-saving and greater design flexibility in power circuits. However, achieving stable operation with output capacitors of 1µF or less has traditionally been technically challenging.

In response to this challenge, ROHM developed the BD9xxN1 series (150mA output current) of LDO regulators in 2022, incorporating its unique ultra-stable control technology, Nano Cap™. The performance, which allowed stable operation with an output capacitor of just 100nF, has been highly praised and adopted in numerous applications. The newly developed BD9xxN5 series addresses applications requiring even larger currents, further assisting in resolving challenges related to output capacitors in power supply design.

About Nano Cap™

Nano Cap™ refers to ROHM’s ultra-stable control technology, achieved by integrating three advanced analog technologies: circuit design, layout, and process, within ROHM’s vertically integrated production system. By ensuring stable control, it eliminates stability issues related to capacitors in analog circuits, thereby contributing to reduced design man-hours across a wide range of applications, including automotive, industrial, and consumer equipment.

Nano Cap™ is a trademark or registered trademark of ROHM Co., Ltd.

Terminology Explanation

Primary (1)

In power ICs, “primary” refers to the first stage of conversion from a power source such as a battery. The subsequent second stage of conversion is called “secondary.”

LDO Regulator (Low Drop Out Regulator) (2)

A type of power IC that converts DC voltage to DC voltage. It has a small voltage difference between input and output and belongs to the category of linear regulators (where input and output voltages operate linearly). Compared to DC-DC converter ICs (switching regulators), LDOs have simpler circuit configurations and lower noise characteristics.

ROHM Real Model (3)

A high-precision SPICE model developed using ROHM’s unique model-based technology. It faithfully reproduces the electrical and temperature characteristics of actual ICs, allowing for a complete match between actual IC behavior and simulation values. This enables reliable verification, helping to prevent rework after physical prototyping and contributing to efficient application development.
