Japan’s First Smart Lock with Apple Home Key Support, Aqara J200, Now Available for Pre-Order on Makuake

Aqara, a global smart device brand known for its 51 million smart lock sales worldwide and its status as an official Apple Home partner, has introduced the J200 smart lock in Japan. This new device, which is compatible with Apple Home Key, allows users to unlock their front doors by simply tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Pre-orders for the Aqara J200 began on March 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM JST, on the crowdfunding platform Makuake. The pre-order period will run until April 20, 2026, at 10:00 PM JST.

Recognizing the large number of iPhone users in Japan, Aqara developed the J200 to provide a seamless door unlocking experience, specifically designed to fit the diverse range of doors found in Japanese homes.

1. Apple Home Key Compatibility: Unlock Even with a Dead iPhone Battery

The J200 supports Apple Home Key, allowing users to add their home key to the “Wallet” app on their iPhone or Apple Watch. Unlocking the door is as simple as tapping the J200’s keypad, eliminating the need to open an app. This “blazing fast unlocking” feature is further enhanced by the iPhone’s power reserve function, enabling users to unlock the door even if their iPhone’s battery has run out before returning home.

To enable this feature, Express Mode must be activated in the “Wallet” app.

2. Diverse Unlocking Methods with High-Precision Fingerprint Recognition

The J200 offers multiple unlocking methods, including fingerprint recognition, PIN codes, and IC cards (such as Japan’s public transport IC cards). The fingerprint sensor boasts an accuracy of over 99.95% and an unlocking speed of approximately one second, making it suitable for children and seniors who may be less familiar with smartphones. PIN code options include standard passwords, temporary passwords, one-time passwords, and anti-peep passwords, offering secure and flexible sharing options.

3. Matter over Thread Support for Seamless Smart Home Integration

The smart lock is compatible with Matter over Thread, a common smart home standard. This allows for easy connection to existing Matter-compatible platforms, enabling centralized control of multiple home appliances through a single app. The next-generation Thread communication protocol ensures fast and stable interaction between the smart lock and other smart home devices.

4. Designed for Japanese Doors, Easy Installation, and Long Battery Life

The J200 is designed to fit a wide range of Japanese door thumbturns, specifically those with a thickness of 2 to 22mm. It also supports double-lock doors, which are common in Japan. Installation is straightforward, typically taking only 10 to 15 minutes without the need for professional construction.

The built-in battery provides approximately 10 months of use (based on 8 openings/closings per day after a full charge). Users receive low battery alerts via voice prompts, LED indicators on the unit, and push notifications to their smartphones, preventing the inconvenience of being locked out due to a dead battery.
