WHISMR Enhances W-BM1 Binaural Microphone with New “Binaural FACE W-FACE1” Unit

WHISMR LLC, known for its binaural microphone “WHISMR W-BM1,” is set to launch “Binaural FACE W-FACE1,” an extension unit designed to enhance natural binaural recording. This new product will be available starting March 31, 2026.

This extension unit attaches to the W-BM1, recreating the sound diffraction and shielding effects that occur on the face’s surface. This “pseudo dummy head structure” specifically aims to improve sound image reproduction, particularly for sounds originating from the front. The W-FACE1 is designed to achieve more natural and three-dimensional binaural recordings without compromising the W-BM1’s portability.

Development Background

The “WHISMR W-BM1” binaural microphone has gained significant support for its portability, enabling professional-grade 3D recording using only a smartphone. However, binaural microphones composed solely of “ears” can sometimes present a challenge: the sound image from the front can be somewhat ambiguous when compared to recordings made with a full dummy head.

Facial surface reflections, diffraction, and shielding play a crucial role in sound image localization in binaural recording. To address this, extensive prototyping led to the development of “Binaural FACE W-FACE1.” This extension unit adds the acoustic benefits of a dummy head while maintaining the ease of portability.

Key Features of “Binaural FACE W-FACE1”

  1. Natural Sound Image Enhancement
By attaching the W-FACE1, elements of diffraction, shielding, and reflection from the face surface are added, complementing the naturalness of the sound image. This contributes to recordings where voices and instruments feel more
