Anker’s Portable Power Stations Become First in Industry to Acquire “S Mark Certification” for Electrical Product Safety

Overview of S Mark Certification for Portable Power Stations

Since portable power stations are legally exempt from the Electrical Appliances and Materials Safety Act (PSE Mark), there has been no clear industry safety standard, with manufacturers operating under their own criteria. In response, METI’s “Safety Requirements for Portable Power Stations (Interim Report)” was released in spring 2024. The S Mark now serves as a new common safety standard for portable power stations, awarded to products that pass stringent safety inspections by independent third-party certification bodies, with future JIS standardization in mind.

Inspection Items

Products must pass two strict examinations and audits: product testing and factory inspection.

Inspection Category Details
Product Testing – Safety: J62368-1 and interim safety requirements for portable power stations, electromagnetic noise: J55032
– Battery protection safety: Inspection of protection systems such as overcharge/overdischarge protection functions
– Impact resistance: Drop and vibration tests simulating unique portable power station use cases like “carrying” and “loading into a car”
– AC output safety: Tests related to electric shock protection and short-circuit cutoff functions, as they output 100V like household outlets
– Remote operation error prevention: Verification that connected devices do not automatically activate due to accidental operations via smartphone apps in bags or pockets, etc.
Factory Inspection – Incoming inspection (component/material management): Process to confirm that key product components and materials meet specifications
– In-process inspection (confirmation during manufacturing): Verification of mechanisms and measures to prevent defects during assembly
– Finished product inspection (final check before shipment): Confirmation that processes for verifying protection functions, charge/discharge characteristics, and withstand voltage tests are established after product assembly
– Measurement equipment management (calibration): Confirmation of calibration implementation and management records for maintaining measurement equipment accuracy
– Document/record management: Confirmation of established procedures and records for distinguishing non-conforming products from conforming ones, etc.
