What is Juice Jacking?

Juice jacking is a cyberattack where data is illicitly extracted from connected devices like smartphones and tablets, or malware is secretly installed, under the guise of charging from public USB ports. This type of attack can occur in commonly used public spaces such as cafes, airports, and hotels, necessitating protective measures during charging.

Survey Summary

The recent survey revealed that while approximately 60% of individuals who have used public USB ports for charging feel uneasy about security, about 40% were unaware of “juice jacking” as a method of cyberattack.

The most common response to this unease was “giving up on charging” (46.2%). Only about 30% of all users were utilizing appropriate protective tools. This indicates that while public USB ports are commonly used in places like cafes, airports, and hotels, many users are anxious due to a lack of adequate protective measures.

Four Key Points from the Survey

Point 01: Approximately 60% Feel Uneasy While Charging

Among 353 respondents who have used public USB ports for charging, 60.1% reported feeling uneasy about safety, with 17.3% feeling “very uneasy” and 42.8% feeling “somewhat uneasy.” In contrast, only 6.2% felt “not at all uneasy,” indicating that a significant majority are aware of the risks.

Public USB charging anxiety

Notably, 73.8% of those in their 30s and 68.1% in their 20s reported feeling uneasy. Conversely, only 32.6% of those in their 50s expressed unease, suggesting a considerable generational difference in perception.

Generational anxiety comparison

Point 02: Many Who Feel Uneasy “Give Up Charging”

Of the 212 respondents who felt uneasy, 46.2% stated they “try not to charge as much as possible.” This implies that for many, the primary response to perceived risk is to forgo charging rather than use protective equipment.

While 47.2% of these uneasy individuals reported using “data blockers (adapters) or charge-only cables,” this figure is limited to those already feeling uneasy. When considering all users, only about 30% actively use protective tools. Given that 38.5% of respondents were unaware of “juice jacking,” it is possible that solutions are not reaching those who would benefit from them.

Measures taken by uneasy users

Point 03: Approximately 60% are Aware of Cyberattack Risks

When asked about their awareness of cyberattacks like “juice jacking” or “choice jacking,” 61.4% of all respondents said they were “well aware” or “somewhat aware.” This percentage is similar to the 60.1% who felt uneasy about public USB port charging, suggesting a correlation between risk awareness and feelings of unease or the intent to take action.

Awareness of cyberattacks

Looking at the generational awareness of “juice jacking,” 73.0% of those in their 50s responded “unaware (first time hearing about it),” a significant difference compared to 19.3% for those in their 20s and 21.6% for those in their 30s. Combined with the lower anxiety rate of 32.6% among those in their 50s, there is a concern that this demographic might be unknowingly exposed to risks.

Generational awareness of juice jacking

Point 04: 93.5% Respond “Measures Needed” After Risk Explanation

After reading a description of juice jacking, 93.5% of respondents felt that “measures are necessary” for charging, with 49.9% saying “very necessary” and 43.6% saying “somewhat necessary.”

Perceived need for countermeasures

Furthermore, 50.8% of those who were “well aware” of juice jacking felt “very uneasy,” whereas 0% of the “unaware” group felt the same, indicating that knowing the risks significantly increases awareness of the need for countermeasures.

New USB Type-C Cable for Safe Charging Anywhere, Anytime, to Combat Data Theft Risks

The survey results highlight that many individuals are concerned about charging at public USB ports and feel a strong need for protective measures. In response, Elecom has developed the “Safe Charge-Only Cable (USB Type-C(TM)),” which prevents unauthorized data extraction by physically blocking data communication with its “Data Blocker” feature, thereby mitigating charging risks.
