NXP i.MX 91 Application Processors Overview

The NXP i.MX 91 System-on-Chip (SoC) family, available through Mouser, offers a high-performance, cost-effective, and secure solution that supports evolving communication protocols and new standards. As part of NXP’s i.MX portfolio of application processors, the i.MX 91 family features an Arm® Cortex®-A55 core operating at up to 1.4GHz. Key features include support for LPDDR4 memory, dual Gigabit Ethernet, dual USB ports, and a rich set of peripheral functions. Supported by NXP’s Product Longevity Program, these processors integrate the EdgeLock® Secure Enclave (Advanced Profile), providing critical security features such as lifecycle management, tamper detection, and secure boot capabilities. The i.MX 91 processors are also designed to simplify certification for consumer and industrial applications, making them suitable for medical, industrial, and consumer IoT markets.

Development Tools

Mouser also stocks related development tools to accelerate product development:

  • NXP FRDM-i.MX 91S Development Board: This board is engineered for evaluating the i.MX 91 application processor in Linux-based edge devices. It integrates NXP’s PF9453 PMIC and features an IW610-based tri-radio module, providing Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth® LE 5.4, and IEEE 802.15.4 connectivity. The board supports Yocto-based Linux and Debian images and includes 256MB of NAND flash memory for direct NAND boot, utilizing a lightweight and reliability-focused file system to maximize usable storage capacity within a small footprint. This board is designed for entry-level Linux use case evaluation, aiming to accelerate development and significantly reduce costs.

  • NXP i.MX 91 Evaluation Kit: This kit is designed for application evaluation of the i.MX 91 processor and for measuring power consumption on the power rails. It consists of two interconnected boards: a compute module and a connectivity baseboard. The compute module, built on standard 6-layer PCB technology, includes the i.MX 91 SoC, 2GB LPDDR4 memory, 16GB eMMC, NXP’s PCA9451A PMIC, and power monitoring circuitry. The connectivity baseboard features a standard M.2 KEY-E slot, allowing the use of commercially available connectivity modules, such as NXP’s IW610-based Wi-Fi®/Bluetooth® module. The kit comes with a pre-installed go-point application to demonstrate its capabilities, offering an excellent foundation for design development.
