Social Significance and Background: Towards the Sound Development of Japan’s Content Industry
“emaqi” was established with a strong commitment to accurately deliver Japan’s remarkable manga, carefully nurtured by authors and publishers, to overseas readers without diminishing its appeal. The platform aims to create an environment where international fans can easily access official translated versions across various publishers, fostering a future where the enthusiasm of global manga fans directly benefits Japanese creators.
While the global popularity of manga is rapidly expanding, the protection of intellectual property in overseas markets and the expansion of legitimate distribution channels remain critical challenges for Japan’s content industry. A survey by a specialized organization (ABJ) estimates that damages from illegal pirated versions of Japanese manga will reach 688.8 billion yen in 2025.
Two significant structural challenges impede the expansion of official versions:
-
Lack of a comprehensive distribution platform: Overseas readers often lack a single, convenient platform to enjoy official works from numerous publishers.
-
Translation and localization capacity: The production of official translated versions struggles to keep pace with the immense demand from international fans.
Orange addresses these two issues by establishing an in-house localization system that combines advanced technology with a professional translation and typesetting team. The company prioritizes quality to maximize the appeal of each work while also focusing on developing mechanisms to deliver a greater volume of titles. For example, it plans to publish 100 translated volumes monthly in July 2026 and is building a system to stably continue official localization at an equivalent or greater scale.
With the launch of “emaqi Premium,” works can now be delivered to fans worldwide through a robust global distribution infrastructure. Orange aims to contribute to the sustainable development of Japan’s manga industry by ensuring that Japanese manga reaches overseas audiences legitimately and that profits are reliably returned to creators, thereby building a healthy ecosystem.

Comment from Tsuguhira Ugaki, Representative Director, Orange Inc.
Tsuguhira Ugaki, Representative Director of Orange Inc., stated, “Orange was established with the mission ‘Creating a world where everyone enjoys manga,’ aiming for ‘all manga, in all languages,’ to deliver wonderful Japanese manga to readers worldwide. The ’emaqi Premium’ launched this time is a challenge to build a healthy ecosystem where works nurtured by Japanese authors and publishers can reach fans correctly in the overseas market, without being threatened by pirated editions, and be supported. In the North American market, creating an environment where official translated versions are easily accessible is an important step to protect the value of works and foster new readers. We sincerely thank all participating publishers for their deep understanding and cooperation in trusting us and taking this step together for the launch of ’emaqi Premium.’ Our challenge has just begun. We will continue to remember our responsibility for the works entrusted to us, carefully deliver wonderful works across publisher boundaries to overseas fans, and contribute to the future and sustainable development of the Japanese manga industry by realizing appropriate profit distribution to creators through a transparent system.”
