Consumers are increasingly consulting AI when replacing washing machines, asking questions such as “Where should I buy one?” or “Which retailer ensures successful delivery and installation?” The first purchase locations or store names suggested by AI responses serve as the initial entry point for consumers’ comparative evaluations.
For washing machines, factors beyond the unit price, such as delivery routes, installation space, water faucets, drainage, waterproof pans, recycling collection, and warranty, significantly influence post-purchase satisfaction. Therefore, for sales businesses, it is crucial to understand not only search engine and e-commerce platform visibility but also which purchase locations and retailers AI recommends, and for what reasons.
This survey was conducted to ascertain which purchase locations and home appliance retailers major generative AIs recommend for washing machine purchase consultations, and whether they provide guidance on delivery, installation, water faucets, drainage, waterproof pans, recycling collection, warranty, and in-store consultation pathways.
Survey Overview
The survey targeted recommendations from major generative AIs for washing machine purchases. The AI services included ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. The survey utilized three scenarios for comparing purchase categories and three scenarios for comparing home appliance retailers. Each AI was run 5 times for each of the 6 scenarios, totaling 150 responses. From these, 740 recommendations were extracted. The survey was conducted on July 15, 2026. Data was aggregated based on the number of recommendations, first-place recommendations, ranking points, scenario-specific trends, and the mention rate of various confirmation items.
Yodobashi Camera Earns Most Points in Home Appliance Retailer Comparison
In the comparison of home appliance retailers (S4R-S6R, 75 responses), Yodobashi Camera received the highest ranking points at 240. Ranking points were calculated by assigning 5 points for a 1st place recommendation, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, and 1 for 5th.
Yodobashi Camera stood out for its high ranking points, while K’s Denki led with 28 first-place recommendations, closely followed by Yodobashi Camera with 27. Bic Camera had a high number of total recommendations (68) but only 2 first-place recommendations, indicating a tendency for it to be suggested as a secondary option.

AI Service-Specific Recommendation Trends Vary
While Yodobashi Camera achieved the highest overall points, there were differences in recommendations by AI service. In the home appliance retailer comparison (S4R-S6R, n=75), ChatGPT and Gemini showed a strong tendency to place K’s Denki first, Claude favored Yamada Denki, and Perplexity and Copilot predominantly recommended Yodobashi Camera as their top choice.
AI Responses Often Miss Installation Condition Details
Crucial factors for washing machine purchases include delivery, installation space, water faucets, drainage, waterproof pans, recycling collection, and warranty. In the 75 responses from the home appliance retailer comparison, while delivery/installation, warranty, and in-store consultation were mentioned in all responses, mentions of water faucets were limited to 43, waterproof pans to 45, and drum-type/vertical-type to 28. This indicates that AI responses often omit important installation conditions for washing machine selection.

The survey results regarding washing machine purchase consultations offer the following insights for sales businesses:

“Peace of mind for installation” is a key recommendation factor, not just “price.” AI responses frequently cited delivery/installation, recycling collection, warranty, and in-store consultation as reasons for recommending retailers, in addition to price and points. Sales businesses should structure and present information about delivery/installation, collection, warranty, and additional charges on product pages, not just the unit price.

Even among top-ranked stores, AI evaluation criteria differ. ChatGPT and Gemini strongly recommended K’s Denki, Claude favored Yamada Denki, and Perplexity and Copilot predominantly recommended Yodobashi Camera. Companies should identify which AI and which purchase scenarios they perform strongly in, and then prepare official information that can be easily cited and summarized by AI.

While delivery/installation and warranty were mentioned in many responses, confirmation of water faucets, waterproof pans, and drum-type/vertical-type was relatively less frequent. Retailers have an opportunity to publicly structure information on crucial confirmation items for AI purchase consultations, such as washing machine dimensions, delivery routes, waterproof pan internal dimensions, faucet height, drain location, and door opening direction.

This study is an exploratory survey involving 5 AIs x 6 scenarios x 5 runs, and it is not intended for statistical generalization. AI responses represent outputs from the web UI as of July 15, 2026, and may vary depending on date, model, search settings, and account status even with the same prompt. The overall ranking was calculated using ranking points as the primary metric; the ranking might change if total recommendations or first-place recommendations were used as the primary metric. The extraction of reason-phrases is a reference value based on machine matching.
